Hip and joint supplements for dogs.

Does my Dog Need Hip and Joint Supplements?

Thinking about a hip and joint supplement? Joint supplements can help your dog move more comfortably in their younger years and in their grown-up and senior years. So what should you look for in a supplement label? Keep reading. We’ve got you covered!

What ingredients should you look for?

For starters, your supplement should have a short list of active and inactive ingredients. You’ll want to avoid supplements with a long laundry list of ingredients.

Hip and joint supplements often contain Glucosamine & Chondroitin which boosts cartilage support and due to the anti-inflammatory properties. Cartilage is the padding between your dog’s bones. Ultimately, by building and maintaining cartilage, dogs move more smoothly and with less pain.

Additionally, keep an eye out for Green Lipped Mussels. This is a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids which support optimal mobility to help your dog move comfortably. Last but not least, look for MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane), a naturally occurring anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and source of sulfur.

When to consider hip and joint supplements?

All the running, jumping, and fetch games your dog plays can take a toll on their joints. A primary reason to consider adding Hip + Joint supplements into your dog’s diet is to encourage overall joint health, prevent orthopedic injuries, and encourage healthy movement.

Although supplements help your dog maintain mobility and improve joint health, they don’t take the place of orthopedic veterinary care if your dog is injured.  Also keep in mind that hip+ joint supplements aren’t the same as pain medication and don’t take effect instantly. It actually may take a few weeks before your dog starts to see an impact from the supplements.

What kinds of dogs benefit the most?

Size of dog

All dogs regardless of breed or age can benefit from adding a Hip + Joint supplement to their regular diet.  Although it’s a good idea to give dogs of all sizes supplements, joint support is especially important for larger dogs. Large breed dogs and giant breed dogs are especially prone to joint injuries and discomfort. By providing our bigger dogs with joint support early you may be able to prevent deterioration of cartilage and improve your dog’s overall joint health.

History of injuries

If your dog has a history of orthopedic injuries talk with your dog’s vet about adding in supplements to encourage optimal joint health, and to prevent future injuries. Because of wear and tear on hips, older dogs are more prone to issues including arthritis.

Dog weight

Dogs who are overweight also experience higher rates of joint discomfort, so while you’re working to help your dog lose weight it’s also a good time to try a mobility supplement. Don’t wait until you see signs that your dog struggles with their mobility or has pain. Add a supplement to your dog’s routine as a preventative measure. Early prevention can help prevent stiffness and discomfort.

Dog age

You can start giving joint supplements to your dog at any age from puppyhood through their senior years. Starting supplements sooner can help prevent wear and tear on joints and help keep your dog from experiencing orthopedic discomfort. Additionally, seniors will especially benefit from supplements and it’s never too late to start!
