Muddy dog paws

How to Clean Your Dog’s Paws After a Walk

For dog parents, taking your dog for a walk is a daily ritual. It’s also a way to bond with your pup and keep both of you active and happy. But, as a dog parent–you also know that each dog walk also comes with some potential mess. A fun (or rainy, snowy) walk might involve muddy paws and dirty shoes. Those muddy paws and dirty shoes, once inside– can quickly turn your post-walk joy into a cleaning challenge. But don’t worry: Here are some of our top tips for easily cleaning your dog’s paws and your shoes after a walk so you can keep your home clean and mud-free.

Prepare For Your Walk

Like with most things, preparation is everything. And preparing for your post-walk routine is key. Especially if you want to avoid mud prints or even poop stains on your floor or furniture. Let pre-walk you be post-walk you’s best friend by considering these tips:

  1. Choose the Right Path: Try to walk your dog on well-maintained paths or sidewalks to avoid areas with puddles or loose soil. Of course, your dog might want to pull you toward the dog park, but if it’s raining or snowing–maybe leave that walk for another, less muddy day.
  2. Invest in Paw Protection: Consider using dog booties to protect your pup’s paws. Not only do they keep paws clean, but they also provide additional traction. Plus, just like you take your shoes off when you get home to keep your floor clean, you can take their ‘shoes’ off too.

How To Clean Your Dog’s Paws

When it comes to cleaning your dog’s paws post-walk, there are many different ways to do it. Depending on your dog’s comfort level with having their paws cleaned, you might have to choose the fastest method. If they love being groomed and pampered, however, you can take a deep cleaning approach. Here are our top ways to clean your dog’s paws:

  1. Use Paw Wipes: Keep a pack of pet-friendly paw wipes by the door. When you get home, gently wipe each paw, focusing on the paw pads and between the toes.
  2. Warm Water Soak: Fill a basin with warm water and dip your dog’s paws in. Use a soft brush to remove any stubborn dirt, making sure the water isn’t too hot.
  3. Towel Dry: After using wipes or a water soak, pat your dog’s paws dry with a clean towel. Ensure that their paws are completely dry to prevent any irritation!
  4. Trim Paw Hair: Regularly trimming the hair around your dog’s paw pads helps minimize the amount of dirt and mud that can get trapped between your pup’s toes and makes cleaning a lot easier.

Cleaning Your Own Shoes After A Dog Walk

Let’s face it: walking your dog–even on city sidewalks–can sometimes result in mud, dirt, and miscellaneous debris on the soles of your shoes. And, yes–sometimes stepping in poop is inevitable. Here are some of our tips for cleaning your own shoes as a pet parent:

  1. Remove Excess Dirt: Before entering your home, tap your shoes together to remove loose dirt. If your dog walk took you through particularly muddy terrain, use a brush or old toothbrush to scrub away any stubborn mud.
  2. Wipe with Damp Cloth: Dampen a cloth or sponge and wipe the exterior of your shoes. For stubborn stains, mix a small amount of mild soap with water and gently scrub.
  3. Air Dry: Allow your shoes to air dry completely before storing them. Avoid using direct heat sources, as they can damage certain materials. Air drying (or sun baking) can also make cleaning mud considerably easier,
  4. Use a Shoe Mat: Place a durable and washable mat near the entrance of your house or apartment. Encourage your dog to wait on the mat for a quick paw check before going further inside. Or, if you’re like me and your dog has a favorite chair, leave a towel nearby that you can use to quickly protect your chair and clean their paws with while you get ready for paw and shoe cleanup.

Take a walk on the clean side by incorporating these tips into your post-walk routine, you can keep both your dog’s paws and your own shoes clean after enjoying your outdoor adventures. Remember, a little preparation can go a long way. Happy walking
