Healthy Pups Inside and Out: Grooming

Spot & Tango and Pride + Groom got together to chat about our favorite subject: pampering our pups! We know that having a happy and healthy dog is all about feeling good both inside and out, from high quality ingredients in their food to great ingredients on their skin. Pride + Groom shared their expert knowledge on grooming and why it’s so important.

Why are high quality ingredients important for dog grooming products?

It is not only important to know your pup’s grooming products are free of harmful ingredients like GMOs and Parabens, but it is also helpful to know what beneficial ingredients grooming products should contain. We like to say some of the top essential oils “perform Nature’s miracles” because they are all natural and have such incredible benefits for your pup’s coat and skin. The following ingredients each have different properties and can benefit all your pup’s coat and skin health, and reduce skin conditions or discomfort:

  • Niaouli Oil is an antibacterial oil that soothes itchy skin, heals dry skin, and repels insects.
  • Jojoba Oil unclogs hair follicles, softens coats, and heals hot spots.
  • FlaxSeed Oil is naturally rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and supports a healthy shiny coat.
  • Calendula Oil heals dry, itchy, or irritated skin and hydrates your pup’s hair and fur.
  • Marshmallow Root moisturizes dry, itchy pads and heals hot spots. It is also antibacterial and safe for self-lickers.
  • Coconut Oil minimizes odor, heals wounds, and leaves your pup’s coat glossy.
  • Avocado Oil relieves dryness and itchiness and hydrates your pup’s fur.
  • Vitamin E, also known as “Nature’s Gloss”, provides direct nutrients for skin and fur.

These ingredients are all important to look for in grooming products and are all natural, so something you know you can trust.

What is important for pet parents to know about grooming?

If possible, try and start early and make grooming a positive experience for your pup. This can be done with affection, reward, and treats; in the same way that you want to provide positive reinforcement for your pup when training, teach them that when they get groomed, they will be rewarded for good behavior! It is also helpful to keep up with your pup’s maintenance between professional grooms. This can include brushing, washing, brushing teeth, and wiping ears and eyes. Not only will this leave your pup with less invasive grooming, but it can also get them used to and more comfortable with the process!

Are there any common misconceptions about dog wellness?

Some pet owners think that a baby shampoo or expensive human shampoo are superior to a pet shampoo: this isn’t true. A good pet grooming product is formulated to benefit the PH balance of pets which is different from humans.

How do grooming products help with shedding or allergies?

Washing with a moisturizing formula can release the undercoat in the bath so that brushing before and after the bath is extremely helpful to reduce shedding. Bathing also washes away allergens and ingredients like Jojoba and Coconut oil and can treat hot spots caused by allergies.

How can frequent grooming benefit your pup’s health?

Frequent grooming can prevent painful tangles and mattes as well as soothe certain skin issues caused by allergies.
