Five Great Winter Activities To Do With Your Dog

Building up the motivation to get outside with your dog in the winter can sometimes be a bit difficult. (Especially when I need to get their booties on at 6am when it’s 30 degrees out!) Adding in some new activities are sure to cheer up both your pup and you! If you’re feeling cooped up there are lots of things to get you and your puppy out of the house and having fun.  Here are some fun winter activities for both you and your dog to enjoy.

Dog yoga

When you’re cooped up inside on a cold Winter day dog yoga is a great way for you and your pup to move around.  There are lots of guides online on how to begin dog yoga in the comfort of your own home including our own What The Pup article on some of the benefits here!  You’ll definitely feel refreshed afterwards after getting active and whether or not it becomes a regular hobby, seeing your dog try downward dog will definitely cause some laughs!

Skijooring

Skijooring is the best winter dog spot you’ve never heard of!  This is an activity you’re going to want to do with a larger dog – the AKC recommends dogs over 35 pounds.  It’s basically cross country skiing with a dog. Not only is cross country skiing a great cardio workout, but it’s a great way to enjoy the beautiful outdoors. The owner is on skis and the dog runs, pulling them along.  This is the perfect thing for an adventurous owner and a pup with a lot of energy.  If you try it and you’re really good, you can even compete in skijoring races!

Set up a playdate

Dogs get lonely too! If your dog is spending a lot of time alone in the Winter it could cheer them up to see a friend (especially when going to the dog park is less appealing in the colder months)!  Find a friend who also has a dog.  You two can relax while your puppies entertain each other.  The nice part about this is both you and your pet get to socialize!  This is also just a nice and easy way to get out of your house.

Take a Winter Hike

While hiking isn’t the first thing we think of when we think of Winter, taking a hike in fresh snow can be one of the most beautiful and calming experiences.  Dogs are inside so much more during the Winter so a long hike when you’re both bundled up can give you both some fresh air.  The best part is a cup of hot chocolate for you when you’re inside! (And some treats for your tired out pup ready to get cozy and rest).

Visit an Indoor Dog Park or Pet Store

Lots of cities have indoor dog parks now! If you visit a dog park in warmer weather and miss it, why not try and find one near you? There are more and more of them opening in the United States.  Added bonus: a lot of them also offer obedience training and doggy daycare.  If you don’t live near an indoor dog park, going on a trip to the pet store and spending some time choosing the best toy can be another fun option.  You might even see some other dogs and owners who have the same idea!
