The holidays are nearly upon us! For many this can be a great time to celebrate gratitude for your family and share the joy with others. Because this is such wonderful time of giving, it is important to make sure we don’t forget about animal rescues who often have a harder time during this period when adoption rates slow and rescue dogs are desperate for their forever home (or even a foster family). That’s why for the first 12 days of December, we will be featuring a different animal rescue each day, sharing how they started, and what they could use most during the holiday season. Eighth up is Social Tees in NY, NY.
Founded in 1991, Social Tees Animal Rescue is a longstanding member of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC Animals and a participating shelter under the City of New York’s Animal Care and Control New Hope Program, which places animals in local no-kill shelters. We work closely with the ASPCA and many awesome animal loving companies that help us raise awareness about dogs & cats in need. We have also partnered with rescue groups in Tennessee and California, where the euthanasia rates are higher than they are in the northeast, via which we rescue and find forever homes for hundreds of animals annually. Social Tees Animal Rescue relies almost entirely on benevolent donations from the public, 100 percent of which are used directly to save animals’ lives.

Meet Major! This senior boy was recently found stray — when his owner was located, they didn’t want to claim him. At 12 years old, this extremely sweet and low maintenance blind boy has been abandoned, but you’d never know it considering how trusting he is. Major is sweet with everyone, leans gratefully into affection, and is fine with dogs and cats just can’t have any energetic animals jumping on him since he can’t see. Major is mostly potty trained and doesn’t need a ton of exercise, just some patience as he navigates and acclimates and lots of love and sunny spots to nap in. He walks surprisingly well on a leash even in the city — a little slow but very brave, needs your help and a short leash so he doesn’t bump into things. Major had a seizure shortly after he arrived with us when he was in his foster home, his bloodwork looked fine afterward and the veterinarian was not quite sure why it happened but we’ve kept a close eye on him since and he’s done fine so far. Just important to know that, like with any senior dog, there will be health challenges he’ll need help through. 🙂
Violet is perfect. She is an ideal blend of puppy playfulness and high energy balanced by sweetly lying at your feet, or more ideally in your lap. She is quite smart, picking up new commands daily with instincts that seem almost social sometimes. Hide a toy, she will find it. Hide yourself, she will find you! If you have a game, she will gladly play it – fetch, hide and seek, tug of war, you name it, she is game for anything! Super athletic, she lightning fast, cuts on a dime, leaps over obstacles. She has great energy, always ready to engage and always ready for an extended scratch behind her ears. She is making great progress from a potty training perspective, almost never missing the mat. Violet is calm in the bath if you run warm water down her chest, she sleeps through the night, and after a few seconds of (hilariously musical) complaining, she is comfortable being left alone for short stretches. We have not socialized her with other dogs yet since her vaccines are not yet complete. Don’t miss out on Violet’s puppy days! She is an absolute delight, as much fun as she is adorable.
