12 Days of Pawlidays: Hearts & Bones

The holidays are nearly upon us! For many this can be a great time to celebrate gratitude for your family and share the joy with others. Because this is such wonderful time of giving, it is important to make sure we don’t forget about animal rescues who often have a harder time during this period when adoption rates slow and rescue dogs are desperate for their forever home (or even a foster family). That’s why for the first 12 days of December, we will be featuring a different animal rescue each day, sharing how they started, and what they could use most during the holiday season.

Third up is Hearts & Bones in New York City and Dallas, TX. Hearts & Bones was founded in 2017 by Whitney and Anna, two dog-loving women who met 5 years earlier through their mutual love of animals. Through the experiences of fostering, volunteering, and visiting shelters across the country, they decided to create their own organization devoted to saving as many dogs as they could.

One of Hearts & Bones’ biggest challenges is finding enough fosters in both NYC and Dallas. Fosters are the lifeblood of their rescue, and Hearts & Bones is only able to rescue as many dogs as they have homes ready to take them in. Shelters across the country, particularly in Texas, are overcrowded and overburdened – for every dog that is welcomed into a foster home, a shelter is able to save another life and hopefully avoid having to make difficult decisions due to space constraints.

Hearts & Bones has so many wonderful dogs looking for homes this holiday season:

Cappuccino: Ever felt completely overwhelmed in a new situation? Well that’s basically how sweet Cappuccino has been feeling since making the big move to NYC last month. After growing up in rural Texas, this 5 month old lab mix is understandably a little intimidated by all the sights, sounds, and smells the city has to offer. But that won’t stop him from living his best life! Cappuccino is a world class snuggler and although he prefers new people and dogs take things slow, he warms up into the biggest, most affectionate mush.

Every dog goes through a decompression period after a big change, whether it’s moving from the shelter to a foster home, TX to NYC, or even from their foster to forever homes! While there are certainly dogs who are unphased by a change of scene, there’s just as many who need time to adjust. And Cappuccino is no different. Fortunately he’s getting lots of love and support from his wonderful fosters and we know with some more time and TLC, this sweet pup will grow into his happiest, most confident self. And we can’t wait to find him the best forever family to help him get there!

Maddie: Meet our super sweet 2 year old, 37lb aussie mix Maddie! Beyond her ridiculously good looks, this smart and playful pup has so much going for her, we just know you’ll fall in love. She’s house and crate trained, great on a leash, and a quick learner (her foster says she’s his smartest foster to date!) — she responds really well to direction and training, and already knows sit, down, look, and come! She’s also an incredibly cuddly and affectionate social butterfly who ADORES people. She’s always looking forward to quality time together whether it’s training, walks, sniffaris, or just hanging out.

As much as she loves people, Maddie isn’t the biggest fan of other dogs. But thanks to some help from our friend and trainer @olliesdogs, she’s made incredible progress learning to keep calm around her fellow canines, and can even comfortably hang out with them given proper introductions. She’ll thrive with an adopter who can provide structure and consistency to keep her on the right track.
